ASTON MARTIN ... IQ?
by Makiko Kitamura at Bloomberg.com
Making its impression around the world before hitting the U.S., The iQ has even the high end luxury makers impressed.
Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd., the maker of the $270,000 supercar driven by James Bond, plans a new model -- a minicar built by Toyota Motor Corp.
Aston Martin will start selling Toyota’s iQ model, which tops out at 1.6 million yen ($17,000) as the “Cygnet” sometime in 2010, said Kevin Watters, a spokesman for the Gaydon, U.K.- based carmaker. Watters and Toyota spokesman Yuta Kaga declined to disclose the price or planned sales volume of the Aston Martin version.
The Cygnet, or young swan, will be positioned as a “luxury commuter” model, Aston Martin said in a statement. Aston Martin’s DBS coupe, which was featured in “Quantum of Solace,” the latest Bond spy film, has a 6-liter, V-12 engine compared with the 1-liter engine of the iQ.
The car will be shipped from Japan, Toyota’s Kaga said. Toyota plans to sell a battery-powered car in the U.S. by 2012 that will also be modified from the iQ.
While the iQ trails the DBS in power and size, it has one advantage, it can carry three adults compared to two for the luxury coupe.
